Subroutines

An overview on the concept of subroutines and their use in game.

Subroutines

Subroutines are a series of rapid computer commands or lines of code that allow Technonaught Archetypes to manipulate and control digital systems, either directly, or through network connections.

Subroutine Resources

Subroutines can be activated using Brainstorm Points or CODA.

CODA collectively represents a character’s ability to program, adapt code and work on digital systems, as well as the amount of processing power to which they have access.

Certain Archetypes are granted CODA and some digital devices, traits and abilities will grant additional CODA.

CODA can only be spent on Subroutines and their enhancements and is a resource most available in modern or sci-fi settings.

Digital Noise

A subroutine’s Digital Noise indicates how much attention or alarm such a subroutine would elicit on most secured digital systems and networks. The more digital noise, the “louder” that subroutine is and the higher the risk of detection increases.

Security systems are designed to trigger at different digital noise levels, the more extensive and sophisticated the system the lower the amount of digital noise is required to trigger the systems defenses.

Digital Security Systems

A Digital Security System allows a System or Network to resist cyber-attacks, make intrusions more difficult and enables digital defenses if too much digital noise is generated in the system/network.

Not all systems and networks have security but most with secure information or the handling of currencies or funds do possess some form of Digital Security. Corporations, Government Organizations and Conglomerates often possess extremely robust Digital Security systems.

Digital Defenses

When a Digital Security system or Digital Defense Network is triggered it activates automated defenses of various types depending on the class of system. Some systems may prime a series of cyber-attack subroutines, disable the active systems, or shut down the network, while others may attempt to infect the intruder with malware and spyware. Others still may attempt to have AI agents actively defend the system or may call on the aid of real-life cyber-security personnel to counter-hack to assist in the defense.
