She appears to be in her late 30s, tall and poised, with smooth alabaster skin and striking silver-blonde hair coiled into regal spirals or sleek braids, depending on the audience. Her eyes are a deep violet, uncommon and mesmerizing.

She is considered to be quite fair and she has had many suitors. A smile from Belena can build alliances or bury reputations. She smells faintly of lilac and honeysuckles. Her voice is like polished marble; measured, smooth, and dripping with practiced politeness.

Everything Belena wears is a statement of control, affluence, and strategic allure.

• Her Sister is in Prison because of Her: Belena’s younger sister, once a gifted mage, was arrested for illegally experimenting with Riftspawn anatomy. Rather than risk her own political standing, Belena testified against her and had her buried in the prison system, preventing her execution.

She sends payment to the prison every month for “upkeep,” but has not spoken to her sister in 12 years.

Should the truth emerge, her legitimacy could collapse overnight.

• She Was Once Engaged to Red Rivers: Long before either held their current power, Belena and Red Rivers were once lovers. The engagement ended when Red joined the military and Belena chose the courts.

Their paths have diverged, but neither has forgiven or forgotten the other.

Belena still wears the ring Red gave her. If Red dies, Belena will never recover from the guilt of having chosen strategy over love.
